What excites me most about Frozen is the opportunity to work with a great team of professionals and help the fabulous cast we’ll find create a cohesive vocal sound for the musical. The production offers a wonderful range of vocal colours, styles and group singing, from intimate solo moments to powerful ensemble numbers. I’m particularly excited by the opportunity to help each singer find the right vocal quality for their character while maintaining healthy technique and creating a unified sound across the cast. I can’t wait to work with the team to bring this whole production to fruition and make it something truly special for our audience.
My advice to performers is to start with good posture, which is fundamental to healthy vocal technique. I often see singers’ chins moving up and down with the pitch, but this can actually make voices sound less full and confident. Understanding how the vocal folds and thyroid cartilage work together to produce different pitches can also give singers a much greater awareness of how to use their voices efficiently. From there, I would make sure everyone is on the same page with false vocal fold retraction, as this helps produce that professional-sounding voice so that the sound feels effortless, full and resonant. I’m excited to help singers develop or continue to develop these skills (whatever their stage of development, is) and continue to discover how much freedom and confidence they can bring to their singing.
