There is a place between sea and sky — a sacred realm, where the sun rises and falls and the light is new.
From two of the world’s great First Nations comes a new work: Horizon. Some call it a feeling, some call it the mother spirit. It’s the place where sea meets sky, the horizon we all look to, the compass that guides us home.
Horizon is a powerful double bill, opening with Kulka by Bangarra alum Sani Townson, followed by The Light Inside, Bangarra's first mainstage cross-cultural collaboration. Choreographed by leading Māori choreographer and Arts Laureate Moss Te Ururangi Patterson and beloved Bangarra alumna Deborah Brown, together they guide the award-winning ensemble in stories that honour their mother countries and the spirit that calls them home.
Come explore the cultural forces that bind us together, across oceans and eons. Experience the resilience of the First Peoples of the Oceania region, that extends across the continent now known as Australia, the Torres Strait Islands and Aotearoa, our southern neighbour.
Horizon Audio Description Experience
Bangarra Dance Theatre's Audio Described performances are offered for people who are blind or have low vision, have other sensory disabilities, or for anyone who may need assistance to experience the fullness of our stories. This free service will be available for Horizon at the Pilbeam Theatre on 26 August.
One of the most moving and enlightening experiences I have ever had. - Donna, 2025
Bangarra's process of crafting our Audio Description script runs deep — it begins at the very first creative gathering, when ideas are still forming and the story is finding its voice. From that seed, they listen, observe, and weave language that grows alongside the work.
Bangarra wants you to experience every breath of this story, every shift of light and sound, every heartbeat of movement — authentically, as it was meant to be felt. Each word is chosen with care to honour the essence of the work, so that its spirit can be experienced through words as vividly as it is through dance.
… we had a significantly enhanced and delightful experience. - Julia, 2024
Bangarra's Audio Description offers a spoken word commentary that gently guides the listener through all aspects of the production - the physicality of the dancers, the colours and textures of the set, costume and lighting design, all interwoven with references to the Cultural foundations and storytelling that shape the work. The commentary is delivered through a free listening set and headphones, available for collection from the foyer upon arrival. We ask that you arrive 20 minutes before the performance begins to allow time to settle in.
Pre-show notes are also available prior to the performance. These notes provide insight into sections that cannot be described live, due to Cultural protocols or sound levels within the work — ensuring every layer of the performance is shared with integrity and respect.
Bangarra Dance Theatre is proud to offer this unique experience as part of their commitment to inclusive storytelling, ensuring that everyone can access and connect with the spirit of Bangarra’s work.
…an experience so moving, so magic and so inclusive. I wish to express my appreciation and joy. - Liz, 2022
Listening packs are available free-of-charge but numbers are limited and must be reserved prior to the performance.
